Recruiting can be a tough job. In the space of an hour, interviewers (predominantly recruiters) are expected to ascertain the ability of a candidate which will cost thousands on payroll over the course of the next few months or years. Hiring the wrong person can be a very expensive mistake. To help ensure this doesn’t happen, here are 4 interview questions for every office and clerical position.
1. How do you prefer to be managed?
One of the key metrics for job satisfaction lies within management, and managing people. Many people don’t know how they like to be managed; they only know how they don’t like to be managed. With either answer, this will help to determine if they’re a good fit for the company’s management.
2. What are your expectations for us?
If a candidate doesn’t have a good answer for this, it may be a good time to reconsider if they’re the right one. If their answer stops at “depositing a paycheck on time,” there isn’t a long-term view present, which could lead to high turnover as soon as something better for them comes along.
3. What are your goals?
It doesn’t matter which goals you’re asking about, (short term, long term) the purpose of this question is to demonstrate whether they have personal or professional goals at all. Only about 10% of Americans have goals; but those who do are much more likely to succeed in the long run. Those who do not generally are less focused and less results-oriented.
4. Why did you apply to this job?
This answer will be a telltale sign if this is the company where they want to be, or they applied to this one as an afterthought alongside several others. There are a number of successful people who didn’t begin a career where they expected, so keep this in mind – but it gives you a starting point to determine where they want to be and why.
Interviewing can be difficult to determine a person’s real abilities and motives. There are a few difficult questions that should be asked in order to keep turnover as low as possible. These questions will help determine if the candidate is a strong cultural fit, rather than simply having the necessary talent – because though both are critical in a long-term occupation.
At PrideStaff in Fort Lauderdale, we know the questions to ask, and how to determine if the candidate will be a good long-term fit for your company.
