Are You Leaving this Information Out of Your Resume?

What Information to Include in a Resume

Most job seekers miss out on job opportunities owing to the fact they don’t know what information to include in their resume. On the same note, they may use the same cover letter (CV) in all job applications, which doesn’t work.

Now’s the time to review your resume. It could include a lot of unnecessary information, while leaving out critical details. Unless you align the information on your resume with what the hiring company is looking for, you may never hear from the hiring manager.

So, how do you know what information to include in a resume? Let’s discuss three critical items to include on your resume if you want to land your dream job.

Work Experience

Most prospective employers want to hire someone with experience. So, it would be quite helpful if you put your experience on the upper half of the first page. After all, your resume will only have a few seconds to impress the hiring manager.

Assuming you have many years of experience, rank your work history in chronological order, starting with the latest. Since the CV should be brief, there’s no need to explain gaps in your resume. You’ll have a chance to do that during the interview.

Also, consider leaving a job off your resume if it’s unrelated to the position. That will help keep the resume brief and relevant.

Core Competences

If you have special skills related to the job, create a core competence section and list them. Such competencies include foreign language, computer skills, research, and technical skills. Note, you don’t need to have a formal job to get these skills. You can get them from doing volunteer work or from activities you did in high school or college.

For one, this section may be more relevant if you don’t have a work history. That said, if you can attach certifications to prove you have the skills, it would give you an upper hand.

Education

Education is part of the relevant information needed in every resume. Most jobs list it as a minimum requirement. Like working experience, indicate your educational qualifications chronologically, starting with the most recent. You may skip mentioning your high school if you finished decades ago and have several college degrees.

It’s also necessary to mention education in cover letters. But to avoid repetition, you only need to mention your highest qualification in the cover letter.

Leave Out the Unnecessary Details

During your job search, look for more information about the position you’re seeking. Carefully read the job descriptions and job requirements to know what information to include in a resume.

Add personal information which you feel is necessary for the application. But avoid too many unnecessary details. Most potential employers are no longer interested in marital status and objective statements.
